October 2024: Apple Month

WHEREAS, Michigan is the second-largest apple-producing state in the nation; and,

WHEREAS, the tradition of apple growing is intrinsic to the culture of Michigan in the fall; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan’s apple growers will harvest an estimated 1.28 billion pounds of apples in 2024; and,

WHEREAS, eating Michigan apples regularly can contribute to good health and reduce the risk of diseases; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan Apple growers are dedicated to producing safe, quality fruit for consumers to enjoy; and,

WHEREAS, Michiganders can enjoy dozens of fresh apple varieties available in grocery stores, supermarkets, farm markets, cider mills and U-picks; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan has over 14.9 million apple trees in commercial production, covering 34,500 acres on 775 family-run farms; and,

WHEREAS, Apples are the largest and most valuable fruit crop in Michigan;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 2024, Apple Month in Michigan and encourage residents to celebrate the apple industry by enjoying Pure Michigan apples.
