May 4 10 2025 Correctional Officers Appreciation Week

 WHEREAS, Michigan’s correctional officers create a safer Michigan by holding those under supervision accountable and promoting their success; and

WHEREAS, our correctional officers put their well-being at risk for the safety and security of Michigan communities as they work to de-escalate intense situations and keep individuals from harming themselves and Michigan residents; and

WHEREAS, we honor and remember the correctional officers who have lost their lives and been injured in the line of duty; and

WHEREAS, corrections officers are dedicated and skilled public servants who are critical for the operation of our facilities and use their training and experience to safely and effectively carry out their duties; and

WHEREAS, correctional officers provide ongoing support and encouragement of statewide reentry initiatives which reduce recidivism, support personal growth, and create lasting positive change in residents who are preparing for a successful release into our communities; and, 

WHEREAS, Correctional Officers’ Week offers an opportunity to acknowledge and honor Michigan’s correctional officers for the vital contributions they make each day and for the sacrifices they make to protect the residents of our great state;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 4 – 10, 2025, as Correctional Officers Appreciation Week Michigan.
