May 15, 2025: MPS Awareness Day
May 15, 2025
WHEREAS, Mucopolysaccharidoses and mucolipidoses (MPS and ML) are lysosomal storage disorders with progressive and degenerative clinical manifestations that significantly impact quality of life and shorten life expectancy; and,
WHEREAS, MPS and ML affect approximately 1 in 25,000 live births annually in the United States, and MPS I and MPS II, two types of MPS, are recommended for newborn screening in all states through their inclusion on the national Recommended Universal Screening Panel (RUSP); and,
WHEREAS, individuals and families affected by MPS and ML often experience challenges such as delays in obtaining an accurate diagnosis, difficulty finding health care providers with expertise in their condition, and lack of access to treatments and ancillary services; and,
WHEREAS, residents of Michigan are among those affected by MPS and ML; and,
WHEREAS, the National MPS Society is organizing a nationwide observance of MPS Awareness Day on May 15, 2025;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 15, 2025, as MPS Awareness Day in Michigan.
