October 15, 2025: Lobular Breast Cancer Awareness Day

WHEREAS, invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), also known as lobular breast cancer, makes up about 15% of all breast cancer diagnoses, yet has historically received limited attention and research funding; and

WHEREAS, scientific studies confirm that lobular breast cancer is a distinct disease that behaves differently from more common breast cancers, but patients are often treated with the same therapies due to a lack of targeted research; and

WHEREAS, lobular breast cancer is more difficult to detect through mammograms, often presenting at a larger size before diagnosis, making early detection through mammograms, ultrasounds, and MRIs especially important; and

WHEREAS, the Lobular Breast Cancer Alliance (LBCA), a U.S. nonprofit, works to raise awareness and promote research for this understudied breast cancer type, which currently has no specific targeted treatments and receives less than 1% of federal breast cancer research funding; and

WHEREAS, recognizing October 15 as Global Lobular Breast Cancer Awareness Day will help increase understanding worldwide, ensure patients and families are better informed, and highlight the urgent need for more research, better detection, and targeted therapies;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 15, 2025, as Lobular Breast Cancer Awareness Day in Michigan.
