JUNE 2026: MICHIGAN GOLF MONTH

WHEREAS, the golf industry in Michigan has an estimated annual $6.1 billion impact on Michigan’s economy; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan has nearly 900,000 avid golfers, and is the top-ranked state in the U.S. for the number of public golf courses; and,

WHEREAS, the state of Michigan boasts over 700 public and private golf courses, many of which are championship and world-class golf resort facilities attracting travelers from near and far; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan has earned the reputation as “America's Summer Golf Capital”, and golf tourists contribute at least $1 billion to the Michigan economy; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan Golf supports more than 61,000 jobs with $1.795 billion of wage and benefits income; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan is a leader in golf course environmental stewardship and turf research with more than 92,000 acres of professionally managed greenspace; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan’s charitable impact from golf is in excess of $110 million; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan is home to one of the most active junior golf programs in the nation, with almost 35,000 participating in youth programs at golf facilities, schools, and community centers throughout the state; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan has been host to many national celebrity and professional golf events including the Buick Open, U.S. Open, Ryder Cup, Rocket Mortgage Classic, PGA Championship, and LPGA and Symetra Tour events. In 2025, Michigan hosted 30 state amateur championships, and 14 USGA Championship qualifiers; and,

WHEREAS, the Michigan golf industry continues to provide workforce development initiatives and career pathways to the communities they serve throughout the state;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 2026 as Michigan Golf Month in Michigan, and I encourage residents and visitors to celebrate with any of the many activities taking place at our beautiful golf courses.
