September 2026: Dystonia Awareness Month
September 01, 2026
WHEREAS, Dystonia is a severe, painful, and life-altering neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary, unrelenting muscle contractions that force the body into painful postures, repetitive spasms, and debilitating physical challenges; and,
WHEREAS, Living with dystonia profoundly affects every aspect of daily life; often stripping individuals of their independence, impeding their ability to work, sleep, walk, or perform basic daily tasks, while causing severe chronic pain and significant emotional toll on both patients and their families; and,
WHEREAS, In its most severe forms, dystonia can become so debilitating that advanced neurosurgical interventions, such as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), become necessary to help suppress involuntary movement, manage intractable pain, and restore basic motor control; and,
WHEREAS, Because dystonia remains widely misunderstood and frequently misdiagnosed, individuals often face long, painful journeys before receiving accurate care, underscoring the vital need for medical research, specialized treatment, and public empathy; and,
WHEREAS, Organizations like the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation (DMRF) work tirelessly to fund vital medical research, promote public awareness, support patients and families, and advocate for accessible, life-changing treatments; and,
WHEREAS, The dedicated advocacy of healthcare professionals, families, and community members in the state of Michigan provides essential support and hope to those fighting this debilitating condition;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 2026 DYSTONIA AWARENESS MONTH in the State of Michigan, and urge all residents to recognize the severe impact of this disorder, support affected individuals and their loved ones, and join us in advocating for heightened awareness, advanced treatments, and a cure.
