Michigan's AmeriCorps Alum of the Month

February 2012 Alum of the Month While serving in the Schools of Hope AmeriCorps program in 2010-11, Megan Murphy had an opportunity to network with a wide variety of nonprofit organizations. These contacts, as well as the skill set gained from her AmeriCorps service, helped her obtain full-time employment as the program coordinator for a successful nonprofit organization in Grand Rapids, Mich. called FitKids360. "Networking is unbelievably beneficial for young people entering the job market," Megan stated. "Beyond networking, AmeriCorps helped me develop valuable public speaking skills, people skills, and taught me to work with a team. I give a lot of presentations and work with a very diverse group of disciplines in the health system, so it is important for me to be able to speak to individual interests and build teams among those groups."

The Schools of Hope AmeriCorps program places members at Grand Rapids area elementary schools to improve the reading ability of children, increase the capacity of parents to support their children, and increase the capacity of parents to compete more effectively in the workplace. For Megan, the most memorable and important aspect of her service was getting to know the students with whom she worked. "I enjoyed asking questions, working with them on their reading, phonics, and writing skills, and encouraging them to learn and continue their education after high school. Reading is the most important skill you can learn and I feel so fortunate that I was able to help those children improve their skills. On the other hand, working with children was also one of the most challenging experiences of my year of service. I grew up as an only child, wasn't much of a babysitter, and had few younger nieces or nephews so my experience with children prior to AmeriCorps was limited. I learned a lot about relating to the younger generation and found that I really enjoy working directly with them. I hope to continue to do so as my career evolves."

As an AmeriCorps alum, Megan continues to promote the spirit of service in a variety of ways. She volunteers on a regular basis with the North American Choral Company (NACC), which is a local nonprofit youth choir. The NACC works with Grand Rapids Public Schools to bring music education to children who might not otherwise receive it in school. Megan also encourages others to volunteer and promotes AmeriCorps as a valuable opportunity to gain new skills and experience. "I advise anyone looking for a career in the nonprofit sector to spend a year or two serving in AmeriCorps. It can really make a difference when applying for jobs. It can help you narrow down what you would like to do and what organizations you would like to work for."
