Accountants across SBO ensure the accuracy, transparency, and compliance of Michigan’s financial reporting. 

In the Office of Financial Management, accountants prepare and analyze statewide financial reports, maintain account structures, and resolve complex reporting issues using generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). 

Accounting specialists provide expert guidance to departments, evaluate the impact of new reporting standards, and lead the resolution of advanced financial challenges. 

Auditors help improve the efficiency, integrity, and performance of state operations.

In the Office of Internal Audit Services, auditors conduct financial, operational, and IT audits to assess internal controls and compliance. 

Auditing specialists lead complex audits, develop strategies tailored to unique risks, and provide insights to strengthen agency operations. 

Analysts shape public policy, support decision-making, and ensure effective use of public resources. 

In Budget Development, analysts assess budget proposals, track spending, and provide recommendations on fiscal policy across various sectors, including education, health, and infrastructure. 

In CEPI, analysts enhance education data systems, improve data quality, and collaborate with agencies to ensure accurate and actionable reporting. 

In SIGMA, analysts review system changes, develop financial reports and dashboards, and support data-informed decision-making. 

In Budget Development, financial specialists create funding proposals, monitor legislation, and serve as liaisons with executive and legislative partners. 

In CEPI, departmental specialists lead statewide data projects, set policy on reporting standards, and coordinate with internal and external partners. 

In SIGMA, departmental specialists oversee system improvements, analyze business processes, and guide decisions that affect statewide financial systems.

  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States to work in limited roles within the state government. International students who are eligible for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT) may be eligible to work in student internship roles within the state government, which SBO does not currently offer.

  • The timeframe for hiring varies by department, typically ranging from 4 to 6 weeks. If you haven’t heard anything after this period passes, we recommend that you follow up on your submitted application by calling 800-788-1766. If it has been longer than six months since you applied and haven’t received an interview, it is recommended that you consider reapplying for another position.

  • Applicants who possess a degree from a foreign college or university must have their academic credentials evaluated or converted into U.S. educational equivalents unless the degree has been recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Failure to provide this evaluation at the time of application may result in you being screened out of the process.
