Governor Granholm names Mike Flanagan as Education Advisor
January 06, 2003
LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced her top advisor for education policy. Mike Flanagan, 52, of Delta Township joins the Governor's executive staff as Chief Policy Advisor for Education.
Flanagan currently serves as Executive Director of the Michigan Association of School Administrators (MASA). He is also Executive Director of the Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators (MAISA), and will take leave from both positions to advise the Governor.
At MASA/MAISA, Flanagan oversees operations that serve 1,200 public school superintendents and their associates, as well as administrators in 57 intermediate school districts in Michigan. Previously, Flanagan was Superintendent of the Wayne County Regional Educational Service Agency and of the Farmington/Farmington Hills School District.
"Educating our kids is Michigan's number one priority, which is why I value the hands-on experience that Mike Flanagan brings to my team," Granholm said. "Mike is a creative thinker, an energetic public servant and role model, and his lifelong commitment to public education will be an invaluable asset."
In his many years as an administrator and educator, Flanagan has served on several executive commissions and has received numerous awards, including the PTA-PTO Lifetime Achievement Award and the Crystal Apple Award from Michigan State University.
