Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that she has ordered flags at state buildings to be lowered to half staff to honor Trooper Kevin M. Marshall who was fatally shot Monday during a standoff with a barricaded gunman in Newaygo County. Flags will be lowered until sundown of the day of the funeral. Funeral arrangements have not yet been confirmed.
“Michigan’s citizens need only to see the regal blue of a state trooper’s uniform to see a true hero in their midst,” Granholm said. “Trooper Marshall was such a hero and his loss is a grim reminder of the danger our first responders place themselves in everyday so that we might be safe.”
In the early morning of July 7, the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team was requested to respond to the home where an individual barricaded himself. When negotiations failed, the team entered the home where they were met with gunfire. Marshall died during surgery at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.
“The Michigan State Police give up a little bit of their own security everyday to protect the safety and security of Michigan’s families. On behalf of all of our citizens, I thank them and join them in mourning the loss of Trooper Marshall,” said Granholm.
The eight-year Michigan State Police veteran and member of the department’s Emergency Support Team, is survived by his wife and two children.
