LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the appointment of Jack L. Van Coevering as chairperson of the Michigan Tax Tribunal.
“Jack has an immense amount of knowledge regarding tax policy, and that expertise will ensure that the tribunal is effectively working for Michigan citizens,” Granholm said. “It is an honor to have him serve in this capacity.”
A resident of Caledonia, Van Coevering most recently served as the administrator of legal and hearings office in the Michigan Department of Treasury. Prior to serving as office administrator, he was Treasury’s senior tax counsel.
Previously, Van Coevering served as an assistant attorney general in the revenue division of the Michigan Department of Attorney General. From 1987 to 1992, he served as an assistant defender in the Michigan Supreme Court state appellate defender office.
Van Coevering earned his law degree from the University of Michigan and holds a bachelor’s of arts degree from Calvin College.
He succeeds Thomas J. Hughes whose term has expired. Van Coevering is appointed to a term that begins August 18, 2003 and expires June 30, 2007.
The tax tribunal is responsible for reviewing all matters relating to the administration of the property tax laws. Duties of the tribunal include review of disputes relating to assessment, valuation, rates, equalization, special assessments, allocation, and refunds or re-determination of taxes.
