Governor Granholm Designates Samona Chair of Liquor Control Commission

August 26, 2003

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today designated Nida Samona as chair of the Liquor Control Commission.  Samona was appointed to the commission in June with an effective start date of August 25, 2003.

“Nida will work hard to ensure that Michigan is enforcing the state’s liquor laws and that the people of Michigan are obeying those laws,” Granholm said.

Samona, of Southfield, most recently served as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Macomb County, assigned to the Criminal Sexual Conduct Unit.  Previously, she served as a trial attorney in Macomb County District Court and Circuit Court.

Samona earned her law degree at The Detroit College of Law and holds a bachelor’s of arts degree from Marygrove College in Detroit.

The primary function of the Liquor Control Commission is control of alcoholic beverage traffic and consumption in Michigan.  The Commission's guiding philosophy is to make alcoholic beverages available while regulating their sale and distribution in order to protect the rights and interests of all Michigan citizens.  This is done through selective licensing and strict enforcement of the Michigan Liquor Control Code and Michigan Liquor Control Commission rules.
