Governor Granholm Appoints Six to Michigan Economic Development Corporation Board and Executive Committee

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following appointments and reappointments to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Board and Executive Committee:

Haifa Fakhouri, Ph.D. of Troy, president and CEO of the Arab American and Chaldean Council. Dr. Fakhouri is appointed to the MEDC Executive Committee to represent the private sector for a term expiring April 5, 2012. She succeeds Facundo del Valle Bravo whose term has expired. Dr. Fakhouri is also appointed to the MEDC Board to serve at the pleasure of the Governor.

Richard Shoemaker of St. Clair, vice president of the International Union UAW. Mr. Shoemaker is appointed to the MEDC Executive Committee to represent the private sector for a term expiring April 5, 2012. He succeeds Robert Jones whose term has expired. Mr. Shoemaker is also appointed to the MEDC Board of Directors to serve at the pleasure of the Governor.

Robert Jones of Kalamazoo, mayor of the City of Kalamazoo. Mayor Jones is appointed to the MEDC Executive Committee to represent public agencies for a term expiring April 5, 2012. He succeeds the late Dewitt Henry. Mayor Jones is also appointed to the MEDC Board to serve at the pleasure of the Governor.

Irvin Reid, Ph.D. of Detroit, president of Wayne State University. Dr. Reid is appointed to the MEDC Executive Committee to represent public agencies for a term expiring April 5, 2007. He succeeds Gary Torgow. Dr. Reid is also appointed to the MEDC Board to serve at the pleasure of the Governor.

Matthew Cullen of Grosse Pointe Shores, vice-chair of the Metropolitan Detroit Convention and Visitors Bureau and Downtown Detroit, Inc. Mr. Cullen is reappointed to the MEDC Executive Committee to represent the private sector for a term expiring April 5, 2012. Mr. Cullen is also appointed to the MEDC Board to serve at the pleasure of the Governor.

S. Martin Taylor of Grosse Pointe Farms, senior vice president of DTE Energy Company. Mr. Taylor is reappointed to the MEDC Executive Committee to represent the private sector for a term expiring April 5, 2012. Mr. Taylor is also appointed to the MEDC Board to serve at the pleasure of the Governor.

The MEDC Executive Committee oversees the corporation and the CEO of the corporation. The MEDC Board authorizes and approves the annual audit and evaluates the performance of the MEDC.
