LANSING -- The State Transportation Commission (STC) yesterday advanced Michigan's economy by awarding more than $75 million in contracts for various statewide transportation projects for April 2004. Electronic bids made up 96 percent of the bids received.
A total of 55 projects were awarded this month: 14 state projects, 38 local projects, two airport-improvement projects and one railroad project. Each month a competitive bid process results in an award of contracts for transportation improvements to pre-qualified, private-sector construction companies.
"These awards bring jobs and transportation improvements to grow Michigan's economy," said Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm. "Preserving and improving all of Michigan's transportation modes is essential to growing the state economy and improving the quality of life in Michigan communities."
Among many other projects, the Michigan Department of Transportation will oversee the following:
- rehabilitate 13 miles of track on state-owned railway (Tuscola County)
- rehabilitate more than four miles of County Road 535, south of the village of Bark River, and County Road B-30 from County Road 535 to the Delta/Menominee County line (Delta County)
- resurface and minor widening of more than five miles of Sebewaing Road from M-25 to Riskey Road (Huron County)
- rehabilitate more than seven miles of Tobin-Alpha Road from US-2 to the village limits of Alpha; County Road 639 from County Road 424 north; and Channing Road from Phelan Road east (Iron County)
- resurface more than two miles of M-52 in the city of Adrian (Lenawee County)
- pave existing Park and Ride Lot on the south side of Round Lake Road east of US-127 (Clinton County)
- construct Jefferson Avenue bike path from Hooker Road to Killewald Road (Macomb County)
- reconstruct more than one mile on Byron Center Avenue from 52nd Street to 60th Street in the city of Wyoming (Kent County)
- reconstruct almost two miles of Nine Mile Road from Hoover Road to the east city limits of Warren (Macomb County)
- interchange and road relocation and pavement widening of the I-96/Beck Road interchange and surrounding area (Oakland County)
- interchange realignment and construction at M-59 and Adams Road (Oakland County)
In 2004, more than $703 million in transportation system improvements will be awarded during the fiscal year (Oct. to Sept.). Multi-modal transportation projects include non-motorized trails, bike paths, railroad improvements, transit enhancements, airport upgrades, and various port and waterway improvements. From October 2003 through April 2004, $453 million has been awarded, which is more than 64 percent of the total program for the year.
