LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and Michigan Community Service Commission Chair and First Gentleman Daniel G. Mulhern today announced that Janet Lawson of Troy has accepted appointment as executive director of the Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC).
The commission promotes volunteerism and community service throughout Michigan and administers various state and national community service grant programs.
"I am very pleased that Janet Lawson has accepted this position to serve the people of Michigan," Granholm said. "Her record of service to the state already is stellar, given her prior service as manager of America’s Promise/Detroit’s Promise and as an educator. She will be a great asset to the state."
"The commission will greatly benefit from Janet’s expertise and deeply instilled spirit of giving back to our community," Mulhern said. "I welcome her on board and look forward to capitalizing on the opportunities we have to maximize volunteer opportunities in our state."
Lawson has 20 years of experience and most recently served as the national director of United Auto Workers Family Service and Learning Centers for Ford Motor Company and Visteon, where she mobilized more than 20,000 volunteers a year to deliver a variety of services to families.
In addition to her service with America’s Promise/Detroit’s Promise, Lawson also was director of volunteer services and manager of the volunteer leadership coalition for United Way Community Services. She also served as a leader, coach, and program designer for Odyssey of the Mind at Rowan University in New Jersey, an early childhood educator in Bloomfield Hills, developer of religious education curriculum for the Archdiocese of Detroit, and a middle school educator in the Waterford School District.
Lawson will replace Kyle Caldwell who has accepted a position with the Connect Michigan Alliance. Lawson will begin as executive director in early October. Her appointment is not subject to advice and consent.
