LANSING – Lieutenant Governor John D. Cherry, Jr. today announced that the Commission on Higher Education and Economic Growth, which he chairs, will start a series of statewide public hearings on Tuesday, September 7, at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
The commission was established earlier this year by Governor Jennifer M. Granholm to find ways the state can double the number of students who obtain college degrees and other credentials over the next 10 years in order to attract knowledge-based businesses to Michigan
"Michigan’s economic future is tied to our ability to raise the education and skill level of our workforce," said Lt. Governor Cherry. "We are anxious to hear from leaders and citizens across the state about how to meet this challenge."
The rest of the public hearing schedule is as follows:
Monday, September 13, at Saginaw Valley State University
Monday, September 20, at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City
Tuesday, September 28, at Lansing Community College
Monday, October 11, at Grand Rapids Community College
Monday, October 18, at a location to be announced in the metro Detroit area
The Marquette hearing will take place from 4-7 p.m. in the Michigan Room of the Don H. Bottum University Center on NMU’s campus.
