LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm will be inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame tonight at the 21st annual awards ceremony hosted by the Michigan Women's Studies Association.
"It is a tremendous honor to be included among the ranks of women such as Sippie Wallace, Gwen Frostic, and Millie Jeffrey." Granholm said. "Michigan has a rich history of strong women, and women are clearly having an impact in the business, political, and academic sectors in our state."
The honorees are women who have made a significant and long-lasting impact on Michigan and in their communities. Granholm is being inducted after serving as the Attorney General and Governor for the State of Michigan, the first female in Michigan history to serve in those positions.
In addition to the Governor, honorees include Florine Mark, president and chairman of the board of the WW Group, Inc., and Cathy McClelland, founder, president, and CEO of the Detroit Entrepreneurship Institute.
This year's historical inductees are Geraldine Bledsoe Ford, Lystra E. Gretter, RN, and Constance Mayfield Rourke. Bill Laimbeer, head coach of the WNBA team the Detroit Shock will be presented with the Philip A. Hart Award, given to a Michigan male citizen who has contributed significantly to the advancement of women's rights.
The Michigan Women's Studies Association, parent organization of the Michigan Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame, was founded in 1973 at Michigan State University to change what is thought and taught about women's roles in history. The Women's Hall of Fame Gallery includes more than 200 distinguished women who have been inducted since the awards began in 1983.
The induction ceremony will held at the Sheraton Detroit Novi, 21111 Haggerty Road in Novi at 7 p.m.
