LANSING – Governor Granholm today encouraged residents across the state to observe Veterans Day by recognizing the servicemen and servicewomen who have honorably worn the uniforms of our Armed Services.
As part of the recognition, Granholm signed an executive order directing all flags be lowered to half-staff on Thursday as a mark of respect for the service and sacrifice of all members of our Armed Forces who have paid the ultimate sacrifice defending our nation.
“Our country’s servicemen and servicewomen have been protecting and promoting our freedom for more than 200 years,” Granholm said. “During that time their victories and defeats, their rewards and sacrifices, and the legacies they left behind have inspired this nation. Veterans Day is a day to recognize and honor these heroes.”
Executive Order 2004 – 34, signed by Granholm, acknowledges the sacrifices our veterans faced in defending the nation’s security, and orders United States flags to be lowered to half-staff throughout the State of Michigan on Thursday, November 11, 2004.
“With so many of our Michigan men and women stationed around the world, including those fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan today, we are not only remembering and honoring past sacrifices, we are encouraging and supporting those brave soldiers who are defending and protecting our freedom,” Granholm added. “It takes an immense amount of courage and resolve to leave behind loving families and secure homes to enter an uncertain and foreign environment. To all those soldiers who put themselves in harm’s way defending this country, today and in years past, we thank you for your contributions and countless sacrifices.”
