Governor Granholm Encourages Support of Tsunami Relief
December 30, 2004
Extends sympathy to Michigan residents who have lost loved ones
LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today extended sympathy to those who have lost loved ones in the nations ravaged by Sunday's earthquake and tsunami and encouraged Michigan resident to consider supporting ongoing relief efforts in the devastated nations in south Asia.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the hundreds of thousands of people affected by this enormous natural disaster, including those here in Michigan who have loved ones in the countries ravaged by this event," Granholm said today. "In the aftermath of September 11th, we know the impact disaster can have on a nation and yet the magnitude of this event is almost beyond our comprehension. Never have we seen so many people in such desperate need of help and that is why I am hopeful Michigan residents will join with others from around the world in supporting the relief effort."
Granholm noted that the end of the year is traditionally a time for increased charitable giving and planning and said residents can find information on how to donate to the American Red Cross relief effort on the State of Michigan's official state website at www.michigan.gov
"As the year comes to a close and people make their final plans about charitable giving," Granholm added. "I hope that Michigan citizens will include the victims of the tsunami in their thoughts and giving activities."
The American Red Cross International Response Fund is among the many organizations providing immediate and long-term relief to the disaster victims. Contributions to the International Response Fund may be sent to local American Red Cross chapters or to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013. Internet users can make a secure online contribution by visiting www.redcross.org
The American Red Cross works with a global network of Red Cross, Red Crescent and equivalent societies to restore hope and dignity to the world's vulnerable people. This International Red Cross movement brings emergency relief to disaster victims, and improves basic living conditions of those in chronically deprived areas of the world. Guided by our seven Fundamental Principles — Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality — the American Red Cross partners with countless organizations in the efficient and effective relief of human suffering and the empowerment of people with the skills they need to help themselves.
The members of the International Red Cross Movement including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (Federation), and national societies like the American Red Cross or Mexican Red Cross, work together toward common goals during times of crisis or disaster. Programs are designed to meet ever-changing humanitarian needs and improve the human condition.
