LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that she has issued a proclamation designating March as Women’s History Month in Michigan. The designation recognizes the role women play in developing and strengthening Michigan and the rest of the nation. The Michigan Women’s Commission will lead and participate in a number of events to celebrate the month.
“Women’s History Month is an opportunity for us to reflect on and recognize the leadership, courage, and tenacity of the generations of women who have paved the way for women in the 21st century,” said Governor Granholm.
As part of the month-long celebration, the Michigan Women’s Commission will host the Michigan Women’s Summit 2005 on Friday, March 11. This year’s summit, entitled “Challenges to Equity,” will kick off a statewide public education campaign on the benefits of equal opportunity in Michigan. The event will have a special focus on affirmative action programs for women and will be held simultaneously in East Lansing, Dearborn, Kalamazoo, and Sault Ste. Marie.
“Michigan can be proud of our leadership on women’s issues,” said Judy Karandjeff, executive director of the Michigan Women’s Commission. “We were one of the first states to give women the right the vote and ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, and now we have women serving as members of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives, and as secretary of state, and governor. Michigan women need to look to these leaders and work together to increase our political participation to achieve a more equitable society.”
Throughout March, a number of events, including conferences, lectures, and theater performances, will be held statewide to celebrate, discuss, and raise awareness for women’s history.
