Governor Granholm's Statement on Passing of Pope John Paul II

April 2, 2005

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and First Gentleman Daniel Mulhern issued the following statement on the passing of Pope John Paul II.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Pope John Paul II.  We join with citizens and Catholics around Michigan and the world in praying for and mourning the loss of a beloved spiritual leader.  He has lived an extraordinary life of service, experiencing and making history in times of turbulence and hope.  With his many papal journeys – including his visit to Michigan – John Paul II reminded followers that ‘hands are the heart’s landscape.’  Throughout his life, the Holy Father’s hands touched countless hearts and uplifted the least among us.  He taught us that we can improve our world simply by lifting up others – and that will be his lasting legacy on this earth.  Whether you are guided by faith or by hope, Pope John Paul’s message was a beacon of light and will continue to illuminate life's path for millions around the globe.”
