LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and Lt. Governor John D. Cherry, Jr. today encouraged Michigan residents to participate in Memorial Day events being held across the state this holiday weekend.
“On this Memorial Day, we are united in honoring those who have lost their lives so that we may live ours in a country that values peace, freedom, and security,” Granholm said.
As part of her Memorial Day recognition, Governor Granholm yesterday held a private meeting with families of Michigan soldiers who died this year while on active duty in Iraq.
Granholm also signed Executive Order 2005-12 directing flags to be flown at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day to honor the memory and sacrifices of all service men and women who have given their lives in the line of duty. At noon, the flag should be raised to the top of the staff.
“I encourage all Michigan residents to participate in the ceremonies, parades, and events around the state honoring and recognizing those Americans who have lost their lives while serving in American wars. We are a better state and nation as a result of their service and sacrifice,” Granholm said.
Granholm and Cherry will observe Memorial Day by participating in Memorial Day events in Lansing, Grand Rapids, Sterling Heights and Saginaw.
