LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that she has initiated proceedings to extradite an alleged rapist from Indiana who is charged with the sexual assault of a St. Ignace woman.
The Governor signed the extradition request for Robert Day who is currently serving a prison sentence in Indiana. Day allegedly invaded the home of the victim while she slept and assaulted her twice. He also took an unknown amount of money. He could not be located at the time but was identified by a DNA match from the Indiana Corrections Data Base.
Upon return to Michigan, Day will face prosecution in Mackinac County for first degree criminal sexual conduct, a life sentence, and first degree home invasion, a 20 year offense.
“The state of Michigan will use the tools at its disposal to keep our citizens safe,” Granholm said. “Thanks to the diligence and perseverance of the Michigan State Police and Mackinac County Prosecutor Clayton Graham, we are able to take the next step in getting justice for this victim.”
Under the Uniform Criminal Extradition Act, the power to execute an extradition agreement for an individual in Indiana is vested only in Governor Granholm and Indiana Governor Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. Now that Governor Granholm has signed the extradition request, it has been sent to Governor Daniels for his agreement.
