LANSING – In an effort to heighten awareness of the fine work of Michigan artists, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and First Gentleman Daniel G. Mulhern have partnered with Detroit Artists Market (DAM) to showcase the works of artists from across the state at the Governor’s Residence in Lansing. The Residence art is the latest “gallery” created to showcase Michigan art, with works on display throughout the Executive Offices for visitors to enjoy.
“Michigan is home to some incredibly talented artists, and we are fortunate to have the opportunity to display some truly inspiring artwork in our home,” Granholm said.
Artwork from 16 artists from across Michigan is currently on display at the Governor’s Residence in Lansing as part of the Governor’s Residence Michigan Artists Program. Artwork will remain on display in the living room, dining room, and garden room until the end of May 2006. Pieces include hanging art, sculptures, and pottery and glass works.
Artwork from private collections in Michigan has previously been displayed in the Governor’s Residence, but the Governor’s Residence Michigan Artists Program is the first time a call for entry has been made to artists across Michigan to submit their work to be showcased in the Residence. Following the completion of the exhibit in June, a new show by Michigan artists will be installed in the Residence.
Michigan artwork can also be found on display in the Governor’s Executive Office. Rotating exhibits from museums across Michigan, including the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the William Bonifas Fine Arts Center in Escanaba, Cranbrook Art Museum, the Dennos Museum Center in Traverse City, and the Lansing Art Gallery are featured throughout the Executive Office. In addition, artwork from Michigan elementary and high school students will be showcased in December.
The Detroit Artists Market sent out a call last spring for artists currently residing in Michigan, or born in Michigan, to submit works in all media, including painting, sculpture, photography, and ceramics. After receiving the submissions, DAM worked with the Governor and First Gentleman to choose the pieces that would be showcased.
“The Detroit Artists Market is excited about this project, and we hope to continue to facilitate the relationship between the state of Michigan and Michigan’s arts community,” said Dan Graschuck, chairman of the board at DAM.
All of the artwork displayed in the Residence can be viewed and purchased through the Detroit Artists Market website, www.detroitartistsmarket.org .
Founded in 1932, Detroit Artists Market is Detroit’s oldest cultural institution devoted to promoting and exhibiting the work of contemporary artists.
