LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today signed a supplemental appropriations bill for fiscal year 2006 which will keep three State Police posts open, increase funding for fire protection grants, and provide public safety grants to counties for security at the upcoming Super Bowl in Detroit. House Bill 4307 totals $8.85 million.
“This legislation will further ensure the safety and security of families throughout the state by guaranteeing that the State Police posts in Groveland Township, Grand Haven and Iron River remain open,” said Governor Granholm.
“I am also pleased that we will be able to help protect families and businesses in communities throughout the state by increasing funding for fire protection.”
The funding in House Bill 4307 is as follows:
• Funding for three State Police posts: $1.05 million
• Increase in Fire Protection Grants: $3.7 million
• Justice Training Grants (MCOLES): $1.9 million
• Fire Investigation Unit: $1.2 million
• Public Safety Grants for Super Bowl: $1 million
While the current budget for the Michigan State Police did not reduce funding for the Justice Training Grants, it did use restricted funds to fund the administration of the grants. This legislation simply replaces those restricted funds with state general fund dollars.
Although the administration feels very confident that the 2005 year-end revenues will be available to fund this supplemental, in the event that funding is not available to fully fund these items, each item will be reduced proportionately.
