Oakland Leader Recognized for Success in Emerging Sector Jobs

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the appointment of Deputy Oakland County Executive Dennis R. Toffolo to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Board and the MEDC Executive Committee.  Toffolo, of Oxford, oversees Oakland County’s Department of Economic Development & Community Affairs and directs its “Emerging Sectors” business development, attraction and retention program.

“Dennis Toffolo is a widely known star in economic development for the many successes he has brought to Oakland County,” MEDC President and CEO James Epolito said. “His many proven talents will be most valuable to our board and, even more importantly, will help us to attract new investments and jobs to Michigan.”

Toffolo is appointed to the MEDC Board for a term expiring at the pleasure of the Governor.  He is also appointed to the MEDC Executive Committee to represent the private sector for a term expiring April 5, 2012.  He succeeds S. Martin Taylor who has resigned.

“I'm committed to serving the state of Michigan,” Toffolo said. “Having been born in Detroit, raised in Southeast Michigan and worked in the private sector for 28 years, I have a good understanding of Michigan's strengths and the opportunities that can be found here.”

A land developer, office building owner and retired president of Hudson’s Department Store, Toffolo serves on a number of boards, including the Oakland County Certified Technology Park (chair), Automation Alley, Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors, Oakland University Business Advisory Board, Detroit Regional Chamber Partnership Board, and MDOT Transportation Research Board.

Toffolo holds a master’s degree in business administration from Central Michigan University and received his bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University.

The MEDC Board authorizes and approves the annual audit of the MEDC and evaluates the corporation’s performance.  The MEDC Executive Committee is responsible for appointing and overseeing the CEO.
