LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today signed legislation that will help protect existing jobs and create new jobs at Port Huron’s Pro Weld. The legislation makes the company eligible for a property tax abatement as part of the city’s industrial development district.
“During this period of economic transition, we must fight for every job in every community,” said Granholm. “I’m pleased to sign legislation that protects and creates jobs in Port Huron.”
Public Act 22 of 2006 helps correct an error made several years ago when Pro Weld chose the location for its facility in Port Huron. The company’s selection was based on information from the local economic development corporation that it would qualify as part of the community’s industrial development district. The facility, however, was not actually within the district, and the company did not qualify for an industrial facilities exemption to reduce their property taxes. The legislation signed by Granholm today makes the company eligible for the abatement.
“Pro Weld met its obligation and played by the rules, so we are happy to ensure that they are treated fairly,” said Granholm.
Pro Weld currently employs 88 people and is expected to hire an additional 15 with the revenue saved as a result of the property tax abatement.
The legislation was given immediate effect.
