LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm’s call for an increase in the minimum wage was answered today by the State Senate’s unanimous vote passing Senate Bill 318 that will increase the minimum wage.
“We have repeatedly called for an increase in the state’s minimum wage, and today we are one step closer to raising the wages paid to tens of thousands of workers in this state,” Granholm said. “It’s a simple matter of fairness – anyone who puts in a fair day’s work should receive a fair day’s pay.”
In her 2006 State of the State Address, Granholm pledged that workers will get the pay increase this year. Without legislative action, the Governor predicted that voters will approve the increase in November.
Granholm is urging the Michigan House of Representatives to pass Senate Bill 318 and noted that regardless of legislative action, she will continue to support the minimum wage petition drive.
