Governor's Radio Address Highlights Campaign to Market Michigan, Create Jobs

LANSING – In her weekly radio address, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today highlighted the new business marketing campaign being launched by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to convince employers across the country to choose Michigan for their job growth.

“We already have the biggest jobs plan of any state in the nation, a six billion dollar plan to create jobs today and jobs tomorrow,” Granholm said.  “The next step is to take our plan on the road, to tell our story, and to invite business from around the country to be part of it.”

The campaign highlights the tools Michigan has to offer job creators, including the state’s competitive business climate, skilled workforce, and the 21st Century Jobs Fund, a $2 billion investment in growing high-tech companies.  The 21st Century Jobs Fund is focused on growing cutting edge technologies including alternative energy, life sciences, advanced manufacturing, and homeland security and defense.  The ads feature Michigan companies that have chosen Michigan for their growth.

The companies include:

• Advanced Photonix, an advanced electronics company that moved from California to grow in Michigan.

• TJ Technologies, a high-tech company that developed a long-life battery that powers a new line of cordless power tools.

• United Solar Ovonic, an alternative energy technology company that is expanding its operations in Greenville from their home in Auburn Hills.

These cutting-edge companies chose Michigan because they say Michigan offered a competitive business climate, unmatched research and development opportunities, a tremendous quality of life, a highly-skilled workforce, a streamlined permitting process, and the 21st Century Jobs Fund.

The national campaign features print, radio, and television ads and targets CEO-level executives who make decisions about moving and growing their businesses.  Michigan-based actor and businessman Jeff Daniels is the campaign spokesman.  The campaign is not funded by tax dollars.

“We want people to listen to real CEOs who are growing real businesses and creating real jobs right here in Michigan,” Granholm said.  “Then we want them to come and see what a great place Michigan truly is to live, work, and play.”

The Governor’s weekly radio address is released each Friday at 10:00 a.m. and may be heard on broadcast stations across the state through an affiliation with the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.  The address will also be available on the Governor’s website on Mondays as a podcast for general distribution to personal MP3 players and home computers
