LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm has signed legislation that will rename the White Pine Trail in honor of Fred Meijer. The legislation comes on the heels of the Governor’s request that the Natural Resource Trust Fund Board rename the trail after the West Michigan businessman in recognition of the his generous offer to donate $1 million for paving a portion of the trail.
“Fred Meijer’s commitment to Michigan should be applauded and I am pleased that we have found a way to embrace his generosity to ensure that our magnificent natural resources can be enjoyed for generations to come,” Granholm said. “The Meijer gift represents a wonderful opportunity for Michigan and we want to be able to accept his gift as well as others that may be offered.”
Last month, Granholm requested that the Natural Resources Trust Fund Board develop a resolution that would allow the state to accept the generous donation from the Meijer Foundation for the White Pine Trail, while still recognizing the other significant public and private support the trail has received. The board adopted a resolution at their June 14 meeting.
The Governor has also asked the board to develop a long-term policy that allows the state to recognize both the public and private support it takes to protect and promote Michigan’s natural resources. That policy should address the naming of trails, parks and other publicly acquired resources.
Public Act 248 of 2006 (House Bill 6110) was sponsored by Representative Dave Hildenbrand (R-Lowell).
