Governor Granholm Makes Appointments to Community Health Boards

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following appointments to the Michigan Board of Pharmacy, the Michigan Board of Occupational Therapists, the Michigan Board of Dentistry, and the Joint Task Force for Health Professions in Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery: 

Michigan Board of Pharmacy

Harvey E. Schmidt, R.Ph. of Tecumseh, president of Schmidt & Sons Pharmacy of Tecumseh, Inc.  Mr. Schmidt is appointed to represent pharmacists for a term expiring June 30, 2010.  He succeeds Roberta M. Armstrong whose term has expired.

The Michigan Board of Pharmacy is responsible for the licensure and examination of pharmacists; licensure of pharmacies, manufacturers and wholesale distributors; and the regulation of drugs manufactured, distributed, prescribed, dispensed and administered in the state.

Michigan Board of Occupational Therapists

John D. Miller of Lansing, attorney with Fraser Trebilcock Davis & Dunlap, P.C. law firm.  Mr. Miller is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2007.  He succeeds Nancy R. Lori whose term has expired. 

The Michigan Board of Occupational Therapists provides for the registration of occupational therapists and occupational therapist assistants.

Michigan Board of Dentistry

Randy M. Freij, D.D.S. of Northville, associate dentist with Preferred Dental Group.  Dr. Freij is appointed to represent dentists for a term expiring June 30, 2010.  He succeeds Michael H. VanderVeen whose term has expired. 

Gary E. Jeffers, D.M.D., M.S. of Northville, associate professor and director of pre-doctoral education with the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry.  Dr. Jeffers is reappointed to represent dentists for a term expiring June 30, 2010.

The Michigan Board of Dentistry is responsible for the licensure and examination of persons prior to their entry into the practice of dentistry, dental hygiene, or dental assisting in Michigan.  The board is also responsible for the certification of dental specialists.

Joint Task Force for Health Professions in Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery

Steven A. Acker, D.O. of Ann Arbor, orthopedic surgeon with Bi-County Orthopedic Surgeons, P.C..  Dr. Acker is appointed to represent the Michigan Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery for a term expiring December 31, 2009.  He succeeds Frank D. Winters whose term has expired. 

Mahmoud M. Awad of Riverview, assistant prosecuting attorney with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.  Mr. Awad is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2007.  He succeeds Mary L. Frank whose term has expired. 

William H. Fenn, Ph.D., PA-C of Kalamazoo, tenured professor with Western Michigan University.  Dr. Fenn is reappointed to represent physician’s assistants for a term expiring December 31, 2009.

Lori B. Oswald of Midland, physician’s assistant with Mid Michigan Urgent Care.  Ms. Oswald is reappointed to represent physician’s assistants for a term expiring December 31, 2007.

The Joint Task Force for Health Professions in Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery is responsible for the licensure and examination of persons prior to their entry into practice as a physician’s assistant.

These appointments and reappointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
