Governor Granholm's Statement on Detroit Public School Contract Negotiations
August 24, 2006
August 24, 2006
LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today issued the following statement regarding the status of contract negotiations for Detroit public school teachers:
“With the start of the 2006-2007 school year just days away, failure of contract negotiations between the Detroit Public Schools and the Detroit Federation of Teachers to reach an agreement jeopardizes the education of more than 120,000 students and the livelihoods of more than 7,000 teachers.
“As we continue to transition Michigan’s economy, our schools must play a key role in preparing our students to compete. A strike will only hinder that effort.
“I encourage the leadership of the Detroit Public Schools and the Detroit Federation of Teachers to intensify their work at the negotiating table in a spirit of cooperation that recognizes the critical role they play in the success of our state’s largest school district. The children of Detroit are counting on them.”
