Granholm Urges Citizens to Make Their Voices Heard, Vote on Election Day

November 3, 2006

LANSING - In her weekly radio address, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today stressed the importance of voting and urged Michigan citizens to head to the polls on Tuesday, November 7.

"On Tuesday, Michigan voters will once again have the opportunity to express their opinions about our state and our future," Granholm said.  "Voting is quick, it's easy, and it is important."

In her radio address, Granholm recounted individuals throughout history who fought for a voice in government, including early patriots like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson;  also, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton who fought for the rights of women at the ballot box and Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks who fought for the rights of African Americans.

"Today, you and I don't have to fight to make our voices heard, we just have to show up," Granholm said. "Read, watch, and decide, and then make your voice heard."

Polls are open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.  For more information about the candidates and initiatives on Tuesday's ballot, visit www.michigan.gov/sos
