LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today encouraged citizens across Michigan to stand with Virginia and ring bells across the state at noon (EDT) on Friday, April 20, to remember and honor the victims of the tragedy at Virginia Tech earlier this week.
"As citizens in Virginia and families across the country mourn the loss of so many precious lives, we here in Michigan stand ready to support and honor the many people whose lives were forever altered by this horrific act," Granholm said. "I ask Michigan citizens to keep these victims and their families in their thoughts and prayers."
Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine has declared Friday a state-wide day of mourning in Virginia. In a letter to his fellow governors, Kaine encouraged the nation to stand with Virginians by ringing bells across their state at noon on April 20.
"As our commonwealth begins the long and difficult healing process resulting from this senseless act of violence, I am filled with images of a Virginia Tech community that is resilient and unified," Kaine wrote. "I am also inspired by the outpouring of support expressed by my fellow governors across the nation."
In accordance with President Bush's proclamation, Governor Granholm has also directed that United States flags be flown half-staff at all state buildings and facilities throughout Michigan until sunset April 22, 2007.
