LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following recent appointments and reappointments to the Commission on Arab and Chaldean American Affairs, the Emergency Telephone Service Committee, the Advisory Council for Asian and Pacific American Affairs, and the Michigan Carrot Committee:
Commission on Arab and Chaldean American Affairs
Shirley Mann Gray of West Bloomfield, director of clinical support services for the Children's Hospital of Michigan, is appointed to represent professional providers of child abuse and neglect prevention services for a term expiring December 19, 2010.
Terry T. Ahwal of Canton, director of development of Madonna University, is reappointed for a term commencing October 1, 2007, and expiring September 30, 2011.
Abdulhakem A. Alsadah of Saline, honorary counsel of Yemen, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2009.
Fay Beydoun of Dearborn, Michigan director of Arab American Institute, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2009.
Ahmad Chebbani of Dearborn, president of Omnex, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2010.
Hany G. Choulagh of Shelby Township, first vice chairperson of the Chaldean Federation of America, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2009.
Samir A. Danou of Bloomfield Township, president and owner of Danou Enterprises Inc., is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2009.
Charlene M. Elder of Dearborn, former magistrate for the city of Dearborn and circuit judge of Wayne County, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2009.
Haifa Fakhouri, Ph.D. of Troy, president and CEO of Arab American and Chaldean Council, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2009.
Hesham E. Gayar of Grand Blanc, chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology for McLaren Regional Medical Center, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2010.
Karen L. Henry of Grand Rapids, executive director of Grand Rapids Operation Weed & Seed, a Department of Justice initiative, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2010.
Alexander H. Isaac of Holly, executive director of the American Arab Heritage Council, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2010.
Karen L. Karam of Ray, broker for Karen Karam Broker, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2009.
John M. Mackay of Detroit, specialist with H&R Block, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2010.
Martin F. Manna of Bloomfield Hills, managing partner for Interlink Media, is reappointed for a term commencing October 1, 2007, and expiring September 30, 2011.
Radwan M. Mardini of Dearborn Heights, chaplain for the American Muslim Center, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2010.
Samir W. Mashni of Canton, president of Samir W. Mashni and Associates, P.C., is reappointed for a term commencing October 1, 2007, and expiring September 30, 2011.
Fatina Masri of West Bloomfield, physician at the Masri Clinic, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2010.
Nida R. Samona of Bloomfield Township, county of Oakland, is reappointed for a term commencing October 1, 2007, and expiring September 30, 2011.
George H. Shalhoub of Novi, pastor of the Basilica of St. Mary Orthodox Church, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2010.
Basel K. Shatara of Grand Rapids, president and owner of The Pita House, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2009.
George C. Steeh of Mt. Clemens, United States district judge and chair of the commission, is reappointed for a term commencing October 1, 2007, and expiring September 30, 2011.
The commission is charged with serving in an advisory capacity to the governor, alerting her to pertinent issues within the largest Arab American and Chaldean American community outside of the Middle East. The commission will also make recommendations about programs and policies for the betterment of Arab and Chaldean Americans in Michigan and will help promote public awareness of Arab and Chaldean culture and accomplishments.
These appointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
Emergency Telephone Service Committee
John F. Hunt of Belleville, emergency services solutions manager for OnStar, is reappointed to represent the general public having expertise relating to telephone systems, rural health care concerns, or emergency radio communications, dispatching, and services for a term expiring December 31, 2007.
Scott R. Temple of Highland, transport engineer for AT&T Mobility/Cingular Wireless, is reappointed to represent commercial mobile radio service for a term expiring December 31, 2007.
The Emergency Telephone Service Committee provides solutions to problems and penalties for violations of rules and regulations regarding the installation, operation, modification, and maintenance of universal emergency number service systems within the state of Michigan.
These reappointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
Advisory Council for Asian and Pacific American Affairs
Dr. Bhimsen Rao of Bloomfield Hills, a doctor at Shelby Pediatric Associates & Child Lung Center, PC., is appointed for a term expiring April 30, 2010. He succeeds Sheila Xiong who has resigned.
The Advisory Council for Asian and Pacific American Affairs is charged with serving in an advisory capacity to the governor and alerting her to pertinent issues within the Asian and Pacific American community. It also makes recommendations about programs and policies for the betterment of Asian and Pacific Islanders in Michigan and helps to promote public awareness of Asian and Pacific American culture and accomplishments.
This appointment is not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
Michigan Carrot Committee
Richard P. Oomen of Hart, owner of Oomen Farms, is appointed to represent fresh growers for a term expiring October 31, 2010.
Steven D. Bouwkamp of Grant, manager of Van Singel Farms, is appointed to represent fresh growers for a term expiring October 31, 2008.
Ryan P. Malburg of Hart, supervisor of G. L. Malburg Farms, is reappointed to represent process growers for a term expiring October 31, 2010.
Glenn R. Vogel of Fremont, president of Vogel Produce, Inc., is reappointed to represent process growers for a term expiring October 31, 2008.
Todd R. Young of Howard City, chief operating officer of Sandyland Farms, is reappointed to represent fresh growers for a term expiring October 31, 2009.
The Michigan Carrot Committee is organized to represent the Michigan carrot industry in research, promotion and education.
These appointments and reappointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
