Governor Granholm Makes Appointments, Reappointments

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following recent appointments and reappointments:
Civil Rights Commission
Mark J. Bernstein of Ann Arbor, an attorney with the law offices of Samuel I. Bernstein, is reappointed for a term expiring December 31, 2010.
The Michigan Civil Rights Commission investigates alleged discrimination against any person because of religion, race, color, national origin, sex, age, marital status, height, weight, arrest record, or physical or mental disabilities and works to secure the equal protection of such civil rights without discrimination.
This reappointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963. The reappointment stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
Council for Labor and Economic Growth
David Adams of Brighton, president and CEO of the Michigan Credit Union League, is appointed to represent business for a term expiring April 30, 2011.
He succeeds William E. Orabone who has resigned.
Jumana Judeh of Dearborn Heights, president of Judeh & Associates, is appointed to represent business for a term expiring April 30, 2011. She succeeds Mitzi L. King who has resigned.
Karen S. Kosniewski of Royal Oak, president and CEO of Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan, is appointed to represent business for a term expiring April 30, 2011. She succeeds Hari I. Radheshwar whose term has expired.
The Council for Labor and Economic Growth serves as the state's workforce investment board required under Section 111 of the Federal Workforce Investment Act of 1998. Additionally, the council is charged with assessing trends and issues, developing strategies, and acting as an ongoing strategic advising body that encourages and stimulates innovative public and private responses to workforce challenges. Members work to develop policies and help implement programs that shape a flexible 21st century workforce that meets the needs of Michigan's businesses and allows them to successfully compete in the global marketplace today and in the future. The council is an action-oriented board with the ability to not only recommend changes but to ensure their implementation.
These appointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
Advisory Council for Asian and Pacific American Affairs
Mumtaz P. Haque of Troy producer and host of Manoranjan Radio Show, is appointed for a term expiring April 30, 2011. She succeeds Amy K. Stillman whose term has expired.
The Advisory Council for Asian and Pacific American Affairs is charged with serving in an advisory capacity to the governor and alerting her to pertinent issues within the Asian and Pacific American community. It also makes recommendations about programs and policies for the betterment of Asian and Pacific Islanders in Michigan and helps to promote public awareness of Asian and Pacific American culture and accomplishments.
This appointment is not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
Commission for the Blind
Mark A. Eagle of Lansing, candidate for the 71st District State House of Representatives, is appointed to represent blind persons for a term expiring September 30, 2010. He succeeds Richard J. Grant whose term expired.
Margaret Wolfe of Ann Arbor, librarian coordinator at the Washtenaw County Library for the Blind and Physically Disabled, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring September 30, 2010. She succeeds Sheila R. Ashcraft whose term has expired.
The Michigan Commission for the Blind (MCB) serves approximately 4,500 blind persons each year through its programs: vocational rehabilitation services, independent living services, deaf blind services, youth services, the business enterprise program, and the MCB Training Center. MCB is a statewide program with a staff of nearly 100 available to serve the state's estimated 50,000 persons who are blind.
These appointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports
Kevin C. Bush of Livonia, management consultant for YMCA of the USA, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2008. He succeeds Charles T. Kuntzleman who has resigned.
The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports is charged with coordinating and developing a statewide physical fitness and health program. The Council has undertaken a number of initiatives, and partnered with several organizations to carry out their goals; some notable events are the annual "Walk to School Day," and partnering with the Michigan Parks and Recreation Association for "Walk Michigan."
This appointment is not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
Michigan Board of Optometry
Harvey M. Curley of Eastpointe, former mayor of Eastpointe is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 30, 2011.
Winifred W. Motherwell of Haslett, self-employed independent contractor of proofreading and editing for court reporters, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 30, 2011.
The Michigan Board of Optometry is responsible for the licensure and examination of persons prior to their entry into the practice of optometry in Michigan.
These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
Michigan Board of Audiology
Srinivas B. Mukkamala, M.D. of Flint, physician and owner of Srinivas Mukkamala MD, PLC. is appointed to represent persons licensed to practice medicine or osteopathic medicine and surgery who hold a certificate of qualification from the American Board of Otolaryngology for a term expiring
June 30, 2010. He succeeds John G. Bizon whose term has expired.
Virginia M. Schroeder of Dearborn Heights, educational audiologist for Trenton Public Schools is appointed to represent audiologists for a term expiring June 30, 2008. She succeeds Linda I. Seestedt-Stanford who has resigned.
Gyl A. Kasewurm of St. Joseph, president and clinical audiologist for Professional Hearing Services, Ltd. is reappointed to represent audiologists for a term expiring June 30, 2011.
Karen A. Jacobs, Au.D. of Rockford, owner and president of and audiologist with AVA Hearing Center, Inc in Grand Rapids, is reappointed to represent audiologists for a term expiring June 30, 2011.
The Michigan Board of Audiology was created pursuant to Public Act 97 of 2004 and is responsible for overseeing the licensure and regulation of audiologists, including establishing specific requirements for licensure.
These appointments and reappointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
Residential Builders' and Maintenance and Alteration Contractors' Board
Gary K. August of Bloomfield Hills, a shareholder and attorney with Zausmer, Kaufman, August and Caldwell, P.C., is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring March 31, 2008. He succeeds Mark J. Zausmer who has resigned.
The Residential Builders' and Maintenance and Alteration Contractors' Board provides for the licensing of persons who engage in business as residential builders, residential maintenance and alteration contractors, and salespersons. It sets standards of qualification and eligibility for licensure, authorizes the collection and expenditure of fees, and provides penalties for the violation of the act, including unlicensed operation.

Barrier Free Design Board
Daryl D. Domke of Grand Rapids, counselor of home ownership for Home Ownership Resources and universal design consultant is appointed to represent wheelchair users for a term expiring October 31, 2009. He succeeds Lucia M. Rios who has resigned.
Roger L. Donaldson of Holt, architect with Roger L. Donaldson, AIA PLC, is appointed to represent architects for a term expiring October 31, 2008. He succeeds Frederick L. Hall whose term has expired.
Donald A. Link of Monroe, utility director for Frenchtown Charter Township Water Department, is reappointed to represent professional engineers for a term expiring October 31, 2009.
The Barrier Free Design Board has the responsibility of receiving, reviewing, and processing requests for exceptions to the barrier free design specifications, requiring appropriate equivalent alternatives when exceptions are granted, and receiving, processing, and making recommendations for barrier free design rules.
