October 08, 2008
October 8, 2008
LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following appointments to a review team that is to examine the financial condition of the Detroit Public School District over the next 30 days.
Michael P. Flanagan, superintendent of public instruction.
Rev. Oscar W. King, III, pastor of Detroit Northwest Unity Baptist Church and president of the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and Vicinity, a nominee of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Robert J. Kleine, state treasurer.
Lisa R. Webb Sharpe, director of the Department of Management and Budget.
Timotheus Weeks, assistant superintendent for business services for Bloomfield Public Schools, a nominee of the Senate Majority Leader.
State statute requires the governor to appoint the superintendent of public instruction, the director of the Department of Management and Budget and the state treasurer to the review team. All appointees will serve a term that expires November 5, 2008.
The governor's appointments are in response to a letter sent to Governor Granholm by Superintendent Flanagan on September 17 determining that a serious financial problem existed in the state's largest school district. Under the state's Local Government Fiscal Responsibility Act, (Public Act 72 of 1990), Governor Granholm is required to appoint a team to review the financial condition of the district upon a determination of a serious financial problem by the Superintendent.
These appointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
