Governor Granholm Announces Appointments, Reappointments

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following recent appointments and reappointments:

Hepatitis C Advisory Task Force

Rosalind V. Andrews-Worthy of Detroit, founder and executive director of Gospel Against AIDS/ Global Research, Education and Training Networks, is reappointed to represent religious organizations for a term expiring June 25, 2011.

James W. Lewis of Rochester Hills, hepatology market specialist for Roche Laboratories, Inc., is reappointed to represent business and industry for a term expiring June 25, 2011.

Andrew C. Potter of Lake Odessa, state vice president of the Michigan Corrections Organization, is reappointed to represent labor for a term expiring June 25, 2011.

The Hepatitis C Advisory Task Force consists of 11 members from groups that are informed on or affected by the risk of Hepatitis C.  The department collects information regarding major risk factors testing, counseling, transmission, prevention, and treatment.  Funding is provided to the department and is put towards producing informative public service announcements and compensation for service providers that offer free testing to the public.  The department also advises through annual reports containing information regarding the status of HCV in this state, state-supported testing and counseling programs, and research findings.

These reappointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.

Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children

Brigadier General Michael L. Peplinski of Fort Gratiot, wing commander of 127 Wing, Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan, is appointed to represent military family education liaisons for a term expiring at the pleasure of the governor. 

The Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children was created by P.A. 160 of 2008 within the framework of the Department of Military Affairs.  It is an Act allowing for participation in an interstate compact on educational opportunity for military children. 

This appointment is not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.

Library of Michigan Board of Trustees

Charles R. Myers of Lowell, former mayor of the city of Lowell, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring October 1, 2011.

Michael O. Smith of Redford, director of the Walter P. Reuther Library at Wayne State University, is reappointed to represent librarians from college or university libraries for a term expiring October 1, 2011.

The Library of Michigan Board of Trustees makes recommendations on the budget, general policies, and services that the library provides.  The board also proposes rules that govern the operations of the library. 

These reappointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.

Michigan Long-Term Care Supports and Services Advisory Commission

Cynthia A. Viars of Grand Rapids, systems change facilitator of the Disability Advocates of Kent County, is appointed to represent primary or secondary consumers of long-term care supports and services for a term expiring December 31, 2009.  She succeeds Raewyn J. Bower who has resigned.

The Michigan Long-Term Care Supports and Services Advisory Commission was created by Executive Order 2005-14 and Executive Order 2006-4.  The commission serves as an effective and visible consumer advocacy role for improving the quality of, and access to, long-term care supports and services.

This appointment is not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.

Michigan Board of Counseling

Martha D. Burkett of Portland, program administrator of the lawyers and judges assistance program with the State Bar of Michigan, is appointed to represent individuals engaged primarily in teaching, training, or research in counseling for a term expiring June 30, 2012.  She succeeds Suzanne M. Hobson who has resigned.

Rev. Meredith Hunt of Sturgis, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 30, 2010.  She succeeds Abdul R. Effendi whose term has expired.

Laura L. LeClear of Richland, teacher at Lakeview High School, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 30, 2010.  She succeeds Gloria J. Rouleau whose term has expired.

Harriet A. Singleton of Kentwood, senior counselor and coordinator of multicultural counseling at Grand Valley State University, is reappointed to represent individuals engaged primarily in providing counseling techniques, behavior modification techniques, or preventative techniques to clients for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

The Michigan Board of Counseling is responsible for the licensure and examination of professional counselors of the state prior to their entry into the practice of counseling.  The board also has the authority to take disciplinary action against licensees who have adversely affected the public's health, safety and welfare.

These appointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.

Occupational Health Standards Commission

Gary R. Novak of Howell, health, safety and environmental manager for TRW Automotive, is reappointed to represent the management of principal industries in the state for a term expiring August 5, 2011. 

James B. Cianciolo of Woodhaven, president of Teamsters Local Union No. 243, is reappointed to represent labor in the state for a term expiring August 5, 2011. 

Andrew J. Comai of Ann Arbor, industrial hygienist for the United Automakers International Union, is reappointed to represent labor and general industry for a term expiring August 5, 2011.

David L. Glynn of Decatur, human resources manager for Special-Lite, Inc., is reappointed to represent the management of principal industries in the state with 200 or less employees for a term expiring August 5, 2011. 

Ronald J. Torbert of West Bloomfield, vice president and general council of Barton Malow Company, is reappointed to represent the management of principal industries in the state for a term expiring August 5, 2011.   

The Occupational Health Standards Commission assists the Division of Occupational Health within the Department of Labor and Economic Growth in developing occupational health standards.

These reappointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

Michigan Truck Safety Commission

Walter G. Heinritzi of Lansing, executive director of the Michigan Trucking Association, is appointed to represent the Michigan Trucking Association for a term expiring August 4, 2009.  He succeeds James A. Van Zoeren who has resigned.

The Michigan Truck Safety Commission is responsible for the expenditures of the truck safety fund and also receives donations and establishes truck driver safety education classes.

This appointment is subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
