Granholm Announces Appointments, Reappointments

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following recent appointments and reappointments:

State Community Corrections Board                                                                                                                

Gary M. Goss of Farmington, chief of police for the Northville Police Department, is appointed to represent chiefs of city police departments for a term expiring March 31, 2012.  He succeeds John Phillips whose term has expired.
 
Robert J. Pickell of Flushing, Genesee County Sheriff, is appointed to represent county sheriffs for a term expiring March 31, 2011.  He succeeds Charles Brown who has resigned. 

Larry C. Inman of Williamsburg, Grand Traverse county commissioner and member of the State Community Corrections Board, is designated to serve as chairperson of the State Community Corrections Board for a term expiring March 31, 2010.
 
The State Community Corrections Board advises the director of Corrections in developing goals, criteria, and guidelines for local governments in establishing community corrections programs.  It also determines grant guidelines for comprehensive corrections plans which are intended to provide safe, cost-effective alternatives to incarceration.  

These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days. 

Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board 

Francisco (Frank) Torre, Jr. of Bloomfield Hills, president and CEO of Torre & Bruglio, Inc., Michigan's largest horticultural and landscape contractor, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring October 1, 2012.  

The Natural Resources Trust Fund Board is responsible for the acquisition of lands for resource protection and public outdoor recreation.  The board determines which lands and rights in land within the state should be acquired and which public recreation facilities should be developed with money from the trust fund.  Once determined, the board then submits to the Legislature in January of each year a list of those lands, rights in land, and public recreation facilities that the board has determined should be acquired or developed with trust fund money, compiled in order of priority.

This appointment is subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.

Michigan Community Service Commission   

Vernice L. Davis Anthony of West Bloomfield, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Detroit Area Health Council, is appointed to represent experts in the delivery of human, educational, environmental, or public safety services to communities and persons for a term expiring October 1, 2009.  She succeeds Michael Thomas who has resigned. 

Karen E. Betley of Kalamazoo, director of foster grandparent and senior companion programs with Senior Services, Inc., is appointed to represent individuals with experience in promoting service and volunteerism among older adults for a term expiring October 1, 2011.  She succeeds Melonie Colaianne who has resigned. 

Kathleen A. Maisner of Bloomfield Hills, retired school teacher and 2008 Oakland County "Teacher of the Year," is appointed to represent local educators for a term expiring October 1, 2011.  She succeeds Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran who has resigned.

Joseph M. Lubig of Marquette, associate professor and director of field experiences for the School of Education at Northern Michigan University, is reappointed to represent local educators for a term expiring October 1, 2011.

Russell G. Mawby of Augusta, retiree and chairman emeritus of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, is reappointed to represent business for a term expiring October 1, 2011.

Donna M. Niester of Ft. Gratiot Township, chief financial officer of Acheson Ventures, LLC, is reappointed to represent business for a term expiring October 1, 2011.

Marsha J. Smith of Traverse City, executive director of the Rotary Charities of Traverse City, is reappointed to represent a national service program for a term expiring October 1, 2011.

Joseph V. Sowmick, Ph.D. of Mt. Pleasant, public relations director with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan, is reappointed to represent Native American tribes for a term expiring October 1, 2011.

Larry A. Williamson of Grand Rapids, area vice-president for Comcast, is reappointed to represent business for a term expiring October 1, 2011.

The Michigan Community Service Commission is a bipartisan state agency charged with funding and supporting programs to encourage Michigan residents to volunteer.  The commission is chaired by First Gentleman Daniel G. Mulhern.  

Michigan Quality Community Care Council Board of Directors
 
Jacqueline S. Day of Lansing, volunteer with the Capitol Area Center for Independent Living, is appointed to represent consumers for a term expiring June 17, 2012.  She succeeds Mary K. Hoodhood whose term has expired.

Tammy S. Finn of Grand Rapids, executive director of The Arc Kent County, is appointed to represent consumer advocates for a term expiring June 17, 2012.  She succeeds Paul E. Bridgewater whose term has expired.

Verna H. Spayth of Ann Arbor, disability advocate with ADAPT, is appointed to represent consumers for a term expiring June 17, 2011.  She succeeds Peggy A. Ball whose term has expired.

The Michigan Quality Community Care Council Board of Directors is charged with promoting and coordinating effective and efficient personal assistance services, including the objective of creating and maintaining one or more registries of providers in designated Michigan communities.
 
These appointments are not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate. 
 
Automobile Theft Prevention Authority Board of Directors

James R. Barren, Ph.D., LPC of Detroit, chief of police for the Detroit Police Department, is appointed to represent law enforcement officials in this state for a term expiring July 1, 2010.  He succeeds Ella Bully-Cummings who has resigned.

The Automobile Theft Prevention Authority Board of Directors is the lead agency for reducing automobile theft in Michigan.  The authority oversees grant distribution to certain programs designed to reduce and prevent auto theft.

Michigan Board of Social Work

Merry S. Battles of Kalamazoo, a licensed master social worker in private practice, is appointed to represent certified social workers for a term expiring December 31, 2012.  She succeeds David P. Stanislaw who has resigned. 

Heather Adams Bell of Grand Rapids, an attorney with Kreis, Enderle, Hudgins & Borsos,  P.C., is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2012.  She succeeds Carolyn J. Curran whose term has expired. 

The Michigan Board of Social Work is responsible for the certification and registration of persons engaged in the social work profession.
