LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today signed Executive Order 2009-41 creating the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, which was formerly known as the Governor's Office of Community and Faith Based Initiatives created under Executive Order 2005-6. The office, now designated as a state entity, will serve as a resource for nonprofits and community organizations, both secular and faith based, looking for ways to further improve their communities.
"This office is a bridge to help provide critical social services to citizens by connecting them to faith-based organizations, non profit and community organizations, as well as the resources available in state government," Granholm said. "This office will serve as a tool that will allow us to build stronger neighborhoods and reach out more effectively to our most vulnerable citizens."
The executive order designates the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships as an authorized state entity to seek financial support for the community and faith-based efforts of state government and for community and faith-based programs and services. Some of the financial support streams include application for funding to the federal Department of Health and Human Services, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and other organizations to support the objectives for community, faith-based, and neighborhood programs.
These changes to the office are intended to closely mirror those changes made by President Obama in February 2009, creating the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.
