LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following appointments and reappointments:
Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission
Constantine M. Dang of Jenison, interim director of multicultural affairs at Grand Valley State University, is reappointed for a term expiring November 30, 2013.
Roland Hwang of Northville, assistant Michigan Attorney General, is reappointed for a term expiring November 30, 2013.
Tack-Yong Kim of Ann Arbor, publisher of the Michigan Korean Weekly, is reappointed for a term expiring November 30, 2013.
Ernestina Santos-Mac, M.D. of Troy, pediatrician with the Pediatric Consultants of Troy, is reappointed for a term expiring November 30, 2013.
Ehsan Taqbeem of Rochester, president of the Bangladeshi American Public Affairs Committee, is reappointed for a term expiring November 30, 2013
Marie-Ange Weng Ph.D., R.N. of Rochester Hills, retired professor of nursing, is reappointed for a term expiring November 30, 2013.
The Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission, recently reorganized by Executive Order 2009-21, is charged with promoting awareness of the Asian and Pacific American community in the areas of economic development and social and cultural issues.
These reappointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
Education Commission of the States
John C. Austin of Ann Arbor, senior fellow for Brookings Institution and member and vice president of the Michigan State Board of Education, is appointed for a term expiring at the pleasure of the governor.
Niya Hardin of Lansing, education policy advisor to Governor Jennifer M. Granholm, is appointed for a term expiring at the pleasure of the governor.
Michael P. Flanagan of Lansing, state superintendent of public instruction, is appointed for a term expiring at the pleasure of the governor.
Education Commission of the States (ECS) commissioners assist in the development of initiatives by sharing their state's educational agenda and learning from the agendas of other states' ECS members. Commissioners also serve as liaisons between educators and policymakers as they work with ECS to promote change and improvement in public education.
These appointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
Elevator Safety Board
David G. Taylor of Holly, service operations manager with Thyssen Krupp Elevator Co., is appointed to represent elevator manufacturers for a term expiring July 22, 2013. He succeeds Joseph McNally whose term has expired.
Antwane M. Maddox of Detroit, elevator inspector with the City of Detroit Buildings and Safety Engineering Department, is reappointed to represent municipalities with populations over 500,000 for a term expiring July 22, 2012.
The Elevator Safety Board responsibilities include the promulgation of rules, preparation of examinations, and issuance of elevator contractor licenses.
These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
Great Lakes Protection Fund Board of Directors
Kenneth J. DeBeaussaert of Clinton Township, director of the Office of the Great Lakes, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring October 11, 2010.
Maureen H. Smyth of East Lansing, vice president of programs with C.S. Mott Foundation, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring October 11, 2010.
The Great Lakes Protection Fund Board of Directors provides funding for the Protection Fund and offers grants for projects that help institutions and agencies of the Great Lakes region work together toward cleaning up their shared lake resources.
These reappointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
State Teacher Tenure Commission
James Petrie of Northville, member of the Wayne County Regional Educational Service Agency, is reappointed to represent the Board of Education for a term expiring August 31, 2014.
The State Teacher Tenure Commission renders decisions on appeals by teachers who contest decisions made by their local school boards concerning their tenure rights.
This reappointment is not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
