Governor Granholm Announces Appointments, Reappointments

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following appointments and reappointments:

Michigan Early Stage Venture Investment Corporation Board of Directors 

Gerard Boylan of Royal Oak, managing director of Long Point Capital, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 13, 2011. He succeeds Douglass Diggs whose term has expired.

Dennis S. Bernard of Birmingham, president of Bernard Financial Group, is reappointed to represent persons recommended by the Majority Leader of the Senate for a term expiring June 13, 2012.

Charles P. Rothstein of West Bloomfield, founder and senior managing director of Beringea, LLC, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 13, 2012.

The Michigan Early Stage Venture Investment Corporation Board of Directors works to promote a healthy economic climate by fostering job creation, retention, and expansion through the promotion of investment in venture capital businesses specializing in early stage and seed investments. 

These appointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.

Qualifications Advisory Committee

Carlos Bermudez of Canton, associate general counsel with the International Union UAW, is reappointed to represent employee interests for a term expiring October 1, 2013.

Jeffery Stuckey of Okemos, member of Dickinson Wright, PLLC law firm, is reappointed to represent employer interests for a term expiring October 1, 2013.

The Qualifications Advisory Committee, in part, reviews and rates applicants interested in serving on the Worker's Compensation Board of Magistrates and Workers' Compensation Appellate Commission.

These reappointments are not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.

Workers' Compensation Appellate Commission

Murray A. Gorchow of West Bloomfield, former member of the Workers' Compensation Board of Magistrates, is appointed for a term expiring September 30, 2013.  He succeeds Granner Ries who is being appointed to another slot.  Mr. Gorchow is also designated to serve as chairperson of the Workers' Compensation Appellate Commission for a term expiring at the pleasure of the governor.

Granner S. Ries of Clinton Township, current commissioner, is appointed for a term expiring September 30, 2010.  He succeeds Martha Gasparovich who has resigned.

Gregory A. Przybylo of Okemos, current commissioner, is reappointed for a term expiring September 30, 2013.

The Workers' Compensation Appellate Commission has statutory authority to review opinions/orders of the Worker's Compensation Board of Magistrates and to promulgate rules to amend its administrative appellate procedures.  It also has the authority to review orders of the director of the bureau of Workers' Compensation Agency.

These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963.  The appointments stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

Worker's Compensation Board of Magistrates

Christopher Ambrose of East Lansing, current magistrate, is designated to serve as chairperson of the Worker's Compensation Board of Magistrates for a term expiring at the pleasure of the governor.  He succeeds Murray A. Gorchow who has resigned.

The Worker's Compensation Board of Magistrates functions within the Department of Labor and Economic Growth.  Magistrates are responsible for conducting hearings in disputes that arise under the Worker's Disability Compensation Act of 1969 and hear cases related to worker's compensation claims.

This designation is not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.

Michigan Corn Marketing Program Committee

Randall S. Poll of Hamilton, president of Poll Farms, Inc., is appointed to represent district 1 growers for a term expiring on March 5, 2012.  He succeeds Jay Drozd whose term has expired.

Carl A. Barth of Three Rivers, owner of C.A. Barth Farms, is reappointed to represent district 2 growers for a term expiring March 5, 2011.

Clark F. Gerstacker of Midland, owner of Gerstacker Farms, is reappointed to represent district 8 growers for a term expiring on March 5, 2012.

Brian A. Kreps of LaSalle, owner of Brian Kreps Farms, is reappointed to represent district 4 growers for a term expiring March 5, 2012.

The Michigan Corn Marketing Program Committee was designed to increase the utilization of Michigan corn through foreign and domestic market development, promotion and research. 

These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

State Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board

Trisha L. Stein of Dearborn, self-employed public policy and political consultant, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 19, 2011. She succeeds Renee Farhat Loepp whose term has expired.

Cynthia K. Williams of East Lansing, executive director for Michigan Education Special Services Association, is appointed to represent the religious community for a term expiring December 19, 2010.  She succeeds the late Sophie Womack.

Douglas M. Paterson of East Lansing, president of The Paterson Group, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 19, 2011.

The State Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board, also known as Children's Trust Fund, is responsible for developing a plan to distribute funds to statewide education programs that work to develop awareness of child abuse and neglect.

These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

Executive Clemency Advisory Council

Joseph R. Jordan of Detroit, pastor of Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring at the pleasure of the governor.  He succeeds Dr. Charles G. Adams who has resigned.

Stuart R. Shafer of DeWitt, attorney for Stuart R. Shafer, P.C., is appointed to represent law enforcement for a term expiring at the pleasure of the governor.  He succeeds Mary Beth Kur who has resigned.

The Executive Clemency Advisory Council is responsible for assisting the Parole Board with the review of applications for reprieve, commutation, or pardon for the purpose of recommending to the board whether an individual application has merit. 

These appointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
