Granholm Says Pure Michigan National Advertising Campaign Should Continue

September 25, 2009

In radio address, governor also says people should enjoy fall colors in Michigan

LANSING - In this week's radio address, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today said people should enjoy fall's annual blaze of color in Michigan and voiced support for continuing the Pure Michigan national advertising campaign.

"Now's the time to plan your own fall color tour," Granholm said.  "There are 10,000 miles of scenic trails in Michigan waiting for you to explore.  If you prefer a driving tour, there are 27 different color tour routes featured on Travel Michigan's Web site at michigan.org."

Fall in Michigan has been one of the subjects of the award-winning Pure Michigan tourism campaign, and Granholm said she supports continuing the campaign nationally.

"Tourism is an important industry in Michigan, and that's why earlier this year we included, as part of our economic stimulus package, funding for a national Pure Michigan television campaign," Granholm said.  "This spring, Pure Michigan ads ran on 15 cable channels, like CNN and HGTV, throughout the country."

"The ads generated a buzz you could hear across the nation," Granholm continued.  "The business magazine Forbes named the Pure Michigan campaign as one of the 10 best travel campaigns of all time.  The campaign has dramatically increased the number of travelers seeking information about Michigan and its attractions."

"So, I support continuing the Pure Michigan national television campaign so more people can learn about our beautiful state and its wonderful attractions," Granholm said.  "The Michigan Legislature is considering a proposal to permanently fund the promotion of Pure Michigan from tourism-related state revenues.  This will allow Michigan to have a national advertising campaign next year and in years to come."

The governor's weekly radio address is released each Friday morning and may be heard on broadcast stations across the state.  The address is available on the governor's Web site at ( www.michigan.gov/gov ) for download, together with a clip of the quote above.  The radio address is also available as a podcast on the Web site, as well as on iTunes and via RSS feed for general distribution to personal MP3 players and home computers.  Links to the audio files and text of today's address follow.

"It begins with a slow dance of turning leaves and crescendos in a trillion trees aflame.  For the next several weeks, the curtain rises on nature's greatest show as the 19 million acres of woods called Michigan slowly explode in a frenzy of color.  The show plays along every stretch of highway and coastline, in every city and town. Admission is free, and great seats are available everywhere.  This show is appropriate for all ages.  This show is Pure Michigan."

Hello, this is Governor Jennifer Granholm.  What I just read are the words to a Pure Michigan commercial usually voiced much more beautifully by Tim Allen, but today, I'm the one making the pitch for our great state.

Tourism is an important industry in Michigan, and that's why earlier this year we included, as part of our economic stimulus package, funding for a national Pure Michigan television campaign.  This spring, Pure Michigan ads ran on 15 cable channels like CNN and HGTV throughout the country.

The ads generated a buzz you could hear across the nation.  The business magazine Forbes named the Pure Michigan campaign one of the 10 best travel campaigns of all time.  The campaign has dramatically increased the number of travelers seeking information about Michigan and its attractions.

Campaigns like Pure Michigan are cost-effective.  Each dollar spent on out-of-state advertising generates more than $40 of spending at Michigan businesses and $2.86 in new state tax collections.

So, I support continuing the Pure Michigan national television campaign so more people can learn about our beautiful state and its wonderful attractions.  The Michigan Legislature is considering a proposal to permanently fund the promotion of Pure Michigan from tourism-related state revenues.  This will allow Michigan to have a national advertising campaign next year and in years to come.

We want people outside Michigan to visit our state and enjoy its magnificent beauty.  But with money still tight in this tough economy, this is an ideal time for all of us to explore our own state as well.

Tuesday was the first day of fall, and nowhere is fall more spectacular than in Michigan.  Now's the time to plan your own fall color tour.

You can do it by foot, by bike or by car.  There are 10,000 miles of scenic trails in Michigan waiting for you to explore.  If you prefer a driving tour, there are 27 different color tour routes featured on Travel Michigan's Web site at michigan.org.

So this fall, take the time to get outside and enjoy nature's greatest show.  It's now playing in a Michigan forest near you.

Thank you for listening.
