Governor Granholm Announces Recent Appointments

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following recent appointments and reappointments:

Council for Labor and Economic Growth

Robert Straits of South Haven, administrator and director of Kalamazoo-St. Joseph Michigan Works!, is appointed to represent individuals and organizations that have experience and expertise in the delivery of workforce investment activities for a term expiring April 30, 2013.  He succeeds Trenda Rusher who has resigned.

Stephen Balbierz of Marquette, external affairs director of AT&T Michigan, is reappointed to represent business for a term expiring April 30, 2014.

Patrick Cannon of Haslett, executive director of the Michigan Commission for the Blind, is reappointed to represent additional members for a term expiring April 30, 2014.

Frank Cloutier of Pinconning, public relations director for the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, is reappointed to represent additional members for a term expiring April 30, 2014.

Tim Herman of Flint, chief executive officer of the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce, is reappointed to represent business for a term expiring April 30, 2014.

Timothy Nelson of Traverse City, president of Northwestern Michigan College, is reappointed to represent individuals and organizations that have experience and expertise in the delivery of workforce investment activities for a term expiring April 30, 2014. 

Donald O'Connell of Beverly Hills, executive director of Operating Engineers Local 324 LMEC, is reappointed to represent additional members for a term expiring April 30, 2014.

Sharon Peters of Lansing, president of Claytor Peters Consulting, is reappointed to represent individuals and organizations that have experience with youth activities for a term expiring April 30, 2014.

Eugene Pierce of Birch Run, assistant superintendent of Tuscola Intermediate School District, is reappointed to represent individuals and organizations that have experience and expertise in the delivery of workforce investment activities for a term expiring April 30, 2014.

Jaye Shamsiddeen of Lansing, director of Michigan Rehabilitation Services for the Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth, is reappointed to represent additional members for a term expiring April 30, 2014.

Phillip L. Thompson of Bath, executive vice president of SEIU Local 517M, is reappointed to represent labor organizations for a term expiring April 30, 2014.

Mary Thornton of Grosse Pointe Shores, director of healthcare plans and operations for General Motors Corporation, is reappointed to represent business for a term expiring April 30, 2014.

The Council for Labor and Economic Growth assesses trends and issues, develops strategies and acts as an ongoing strategic advising body that encourages and stimulates innovative public and private responses to workforce challenges.  Members work to develop policies and help implement programs that shape a flexible 21st century workforce that meets the needs of Michigan's businesses and allows them to successfully compete in the global marketplace today and in the future. 

These appointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.

Governor's Task Force on Children's Justice

Daniel Adams of Allendale, detective with the Grand Rapids Police Department, is reappointed to represent the law enforcement community for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

Wayne Beerbower of Farmington Hills, business agent for the Police Officers Association of Michigan, is reappointed to represent the law enforcement community for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

Nancy Diehl of Detroit, retired chief prosecuting attorney for the felony trial division of the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

The Honorable Susan Dobrich of Dowagiac, Cass County Probate Court judge, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

Shauna Dunnings of Lansing, deputy court administrator of the Ingham County Friend of the Court, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

Elias Escobedo, Jr. of West Bloomfield, attorney in private practice, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

Euphemia "Sue" Parish Franklin of Royal Oak, executive director of South Eastern Michigan Indians, Inc., is reappointed to represent child advocates for a term expiring June 30, 2012. 

JoAnne Gasco of Northport, chief judge of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians tribal court, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

M. Gloria Gillespie of St. Joseph, therapist with Assault Recovery Associates, is reappointed to represent health and mental health professionals for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

The Honorable Linda Hallmark of Bloomfield Hills, Oakland County Probate Court judge, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2012. 

The Honorable Judy Hartsfield of Detroit, 3rd Judicial Circuit Court judge, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

Judith Labovitz of Haslett, retired employee of the Michigan Department of Human Services, is reappointed to represent child advocates for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

Kathleen Lacko of Ludington, system of care coordinator for the West Michigan Child & Family Leadership Council, is reappointed to represent child advocates for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

William Lansat of Farmington Hills, attorney in private practice, is reappointed to represent child advocates for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

Sandra Lindsey of Lathrup Village, executive director of the Saginaw County Community Mental Health Authority, is reappointed to represent health and mental health professionals for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

JoAnn Monaghan of Lakeport, retired principal of Port Huron Northern High School, is reappointed to represent child advocates for a term expiring June 30, 2012. 

The Honorable Eugene Moore of Oxford, Oakland County Probate Court judge, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2012. 

The Honorable Pamela O'Sullivan of Chesterfield Township, Macomb County Probate Court judge, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2012. 

The Honorable Gregory Pittman of Muskegon, Muskegon County Probate Court judge, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2012. 

Lawrence Richardson of Adrian, supervisor of Madison Charter Township and former Lenawee County sheriff, is reappointed to represent the law enforcement community for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

Patricia Sorenson of Okemos, vice president of Policy for Michigan's Children, is reappointed to represent parents and representatives of parents' groups for a term expiring June 30, 2012. 

The Honorable Lisa Sullivan of DeWitt, Clinton County Probate Court judge, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2012. 

The Honorable Elizabeth Weaver of Glen Arbor, Michigan Supreme Court Justice and chairperson of the Governor's Task Force on Children's Justice, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2012. 

David Wolock of Royal Oak, attorney in private practice, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2012.

The Honorable Tracey Yokich of St. Clair Shores, 16th Judicial Circuit Court judge, is reappointed to represent judicial and legal officers for a term expiring June 30, 2012. 

The Governor's Task Force on Children's Justice is responsible for review and evaluation of the handling of child abuse cases in Michigan.  It also makes recommendations to the governor on potential courses of action that, if taken, would improve efficiency of the current system in order to better protect children, punish abusers, and enhance the laws governing child abuse while ensuring due process of law to all parties involved. 

These reappointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
