Michigan State Police Troopers Association Ratifies Agreement with Office of the State Employer

July 29, 2010

LANSING - The Michigan State Police Troopers Association (MSPTA) today announced membership approval of a new contract with the Office of the State Employer.  Eighty-one percent of the membership voted to approve the agreement, which covers the period from January 2009 through December 2011.

The agreement provides structural change through health care plan design changes and employee premium sharing.  There is no wage increase for the first year of the contract, a one percent increase in the second year, and two percent in the third year.  The wage increases are more than offset by savings achieved through the structural changes in the health care plan.  The agreement also includes MSPTA's $1.4 million share of the $50 million in fiscal year 2010 employee concessions achieved through banked leave time.

"Structural change in employee benefits is necessitated by tough economic times and financial pressures on the state budget," said Governor Jennifer M. Granholm.  "I appreciate the membership of the MSPTA approving this agreement and helping to resolve our state's budgetary challenges."

"This is a positive for state troopers in Michigan and a real win for the state budget," said Chris Luty, MSPTA president.  "We achieved substantial savings for the state while still protecting the things important to members of our association."

The MSPTA represents almost 1,500 troopers and sergeants in the Michigan Department of State Police.
