In radio address, governor says National Day of Service and Remembrance is September 11
LANSING - In her weekly radio address, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today said that with the National Day of Service and Remembrance coming up on September 11, getting involved now with a Habitat for Humanity affiliate is a great way for Michigan residents to serve their communities.
"Last month, my husband Dan Mulhern and I hosted a family reunion and used the opportunity to help build a new Habitat home in Detroit, one not far from where Dan's mother grew up," Granholm said. "The idea for this project came from seeing members of our families volunteering to help rebuild neighborhoods in New Orleans devastated by Hurricane Katrina. We thought, why not encourage our own family members and friends to come home to Michigan and help build housing here?"
"That led to the creation of the MI Family Builds Michigan initiative in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity of Michigan," Granholm continued. "This initiative encourages Michigan families to help other families by reaching out to their local Habitat affiliate and working on a home right in their own community. The goal of MI Family Builds Michigan is not only to assist Habitat in building quality, affordable homes but also to demonstrate how community service can help speed Michigan's recovery from the recession and the mortgage foreclosure crisis."
"When you volunteer to work on a Habitat for Humanity home, the new homeowners aren't the only ones who benefit," Granholm said. "One volunteer put it best when he said, 'The relationships with the homeowners and your co-workers are the most important things that are built on Habitat worksites.' With the National Day of Service and Remembrance coming up on September 11, now's the time to participate in a Habitat project in your community."

Earlier this week, I was in Traverse City to celebrate the construction of another Habitat for Humanity home in the Grand Traverse area. With the National Day of Service and Remembrance coming up on September 11, getting involved now with your local Habitat for Humanity affiliate is a great way to serve your community.

We're blessed to have many sponsors and partners who are helping us and Habitat Michigan. They include Whirlpool Corporation, which donates a stove and refrigerator to every new Habitat home built in North America, and the Dow Chemical Company, which donates free insulation. Henry Ford Health System and the West Michigan Whitecaps also are partners along with many others.
Today, more than 3,200 Michigan families live in a Habitat for Humanity home. The need for decent, affordable housing in Michigan is great. If you'd like to get involved in a Habitat project in your local community, here's how:
