Ken Theis to return to private sector

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced she will be designating Phyllis Mellon as acting director of the Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB).  Mellon will be replacing current director Ken Theis who has accepted a position in the private sector.  The leadership change will be effective October 1.

"Phyllis Mellon is an experienced and talented public servant with a proven track record of leadership in our administration," Granholm said.  "Her depth of knowledge and history with the department as well as her vast experience in state government will ensure a seamless and smooth transition."

Mellon has served as acting director in the Granholm Cabinet on two occasions:  In 2007, she served as acting director of the Department of Agriculture where she had been serving as chief deputy director; and more recently, this year, she served as acting director of the Department of Management and Budget as well as chief deputy director for the Department of Information Technology prior to the consolidation of the two departments.

Mellon holds a master's degree and doctorate degree from Michigan State University where she has served as an adjunct professor.  She earned her bachelor's degree from Penn State University.

In announcing the upcoming change in leadership, Granholm praised Ken Theis for his leadership and many accomplishments within state government.

"Ken Theis led the state to the number one ranking in digital government, and he has been instrumental in our technology success stories," said Granholm.  "I thank him for his dedicated service to the citizens of Michigan and for everything he has done to help us streamline government and make it more user friendly as well as transparent for citizens.  The impact of his work will be felt for years to come and we wish him nothing but continued success."
