LANSING, Mich. - Gov. Rick Snyder today appointed 12 members to the Controlled Substance Advisory Commission, which recommends actions to address identified problems of abuse.
"The individuals appointed will provide the commission with their unique backgrounds and skills in their specific fields," Snyder said. "Substance abuse is not something we should overlook or take lightly and I am confident the appointees will work hard to address this issue."
Appointed members:
Gregory Cibor, of Canton, is a physician at Providence Family and Athletic Medicine in Farmington Hills. He also serves as the team doctor for Madonna University and the Plymouth Whalers. Cibor earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Kalamazoo College and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Michigan State University. He will represent the general public and replaces Brian Sullivan.
Richard Dettloff, of Rockford, is a medical outcomes specialist for Pfizer and adjunct faculty for Ferris State University College of Pharmacy, as well as an adjunct instructor at Michigan State University and Western Michigan University. He earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from Ferris State University and a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Cincinnati. Dettloff will represent representatives of pharmaceutical manufacturers and replaces Charles Blanchard.
Kevan Kreitman, of Birmingham, is a physician and partner with Shores Podiatry Associates, P.C. in Roseville. He previously operated private practices in southeast Michigan for 13 years. Kreitman earned a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Michigan and a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine. He will represent the Board of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery and replaces Harry Kezelian.
Nichole Penny, of Three Rivers, is a district pharmacy supervisor for Walgreens and member of the Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy Advisory Board. She previously served on several committees for the Michigan Pharmacists Association. Penny earned a bachelor's degree from Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy. She will represent the Board of Pharmacy and replaces Suhair Farida.
David Picone, of Mason, is medical director of Community Mental Health Authority of Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counties. He also serves as an assistant clinical professor at Michigan State University Department of Psychiatry and has 24 years of experience in psychology and substance abuse. Picone earned a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Massachusetts and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri. He will represent a licensed health care professional from the field of psychiatry and replaces Scott Monteith.
Susan Sevensma, of Grand Rapids, is director of medical education at Metro Health Hospital in Wyoming and medical director for Metro Health-Breton Clinic in Grand Rapids. She earned a bachelor's degree from Grand Valley State University, and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Michigan State University. Sevensma will represent the Board of Osteopathic Medicine and replaces Douglas Vanator.
Jeffrey Steffey, of Grayling, is the director of Pharmacy Services at Mercy Hospital Grayling. He has practiced in retail, hospital and nuclear pharmacy with a significant component of practice in pain management including oncology, hospice, pain clinic and hospital. Steffey earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from Ferris State University and an MBA from Saginaw Valley State University. He will represent the pharmacology profession and replaces Claire Saadeh.
Kim Szajna, of Sterling Heights, is a therapist for Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Services and a mental health and substance abuse therapist at Clinton Counseling Center. She also serves as coordinator of the Health and Human Services Department at Macomb Community College. Szajna is a licensed professional counselor and certified advanced addictions counselor. She earned a bachelor's degree in social work from Wayne State University and a master's degree in counseling with a certification in addiction studies from Oakland University. Szajna will represent the general public and replaces Danarius Hemphill.
Jeffrey Westra, of Battle Creek, is the program director for the Adult Circuit and District Drug Courts and Office of Community Corrections for Barry County Trial Court. He previously served as a parole and probation agent with the Michigan Department of Corrections and as treasurer for Staring Over for Success, an organization that assists those being released from prison. Westra earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Liberty University in Virginia. He will represent the general public and replaces Dennis Smith.
William Wright, of Lansing, is retired after 35 years of private dental practice. He previously served in the U.S. Air Force Dental Corps, at Delta Dental Co. and Lansing Community College. He currently serves on the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners. Wright attended Stanford University and earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He will represent the Board of Dentistry and replaces Rhonda Hennessy.
Kathy Bouchard-Wyant, of East Lansing, is a project coordinator for the Sparrow Physicians Health Network and is a founding member of the Unit Based Council at Sparrow Hospital, which works to develop best practices methods. She is also a nurse representative to Sparrow Hospital's Perinatal Safety and Improvement Committee. Bouchard-Wyant earned a bachelor's degree in social studies from Michigan State University and earned her certification as a registered nurse from the Hurley Medical Center School of Nursing. She will represent the Board of Nursing and replaces Nina Bugbee.
Reappointed member:
Lawrence Letsche, of Plymouth, is owner of Remrock Farms Veterinary Hospital and has more than 27 years of veterinary experience. He has served as a member, vice-chair and chair of the Michigan Board of Veterinary Medicine. Letsche earned both a bachelor's degree and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University. He will represent the Board of Veterinary Medicine.
Appointees will serve two-year terms expiring Aug. 30, 2013, and are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
