LANSING, Mich. - Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Rasha Demashkieh, of Fort Gratiot, and Deloris Hunt, of Farmington Hills, to the Civil Rights Commission.
The commission, which was established by Michigan's Constitution of 1963, investigates alleged discrimination and works to protect civil rights.
"These two appointees have demonstrated tremendous leadership and skill in their respective fields," Snyder said. "I know they will work hard to protect civil rights."
Demashkieh is a pharmacist at CVS/Caremark in Port Huron. She previously worked as a pharmacist for Vollmer Pharmacy. Demashkieh was elected to serve on the Port Huron Area School District Board of Education in 2003, and was re-elected in 2007 and 2011. She also serves on the Visiting Nurses Association Board in Port Huron and the St. Clair County Community Foundation Board. Demashkieh earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the Wayne State University Pharmacy School. She replaces Nabih Ayad.
Hunt is a senior executive in the human resources department of Detroit Medical Center. She previously served in the human resources department at the Henry Ford Health System and the Saint Joseph Mercy Health System in Ann Arbor. Hunt is a member of the Leadership Detroit Class XXXIII, the National Urban League and the National Association of African Americans in Human Resources of Greater Detroit. She earned a bachelor's degree in general administration from Wayne State University and a master's degree in general administration from Central Michigan University. Hunt replaces Bertram Marks.
Appointees will serve four-year terms expiring Dec. 31, 2015, and are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
