Governor makes appointments to Blue Cross Blue Shield Board of Directors

LANSING, Mich. - Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointments of James Haveman, of Grand Haven, Anne Mervenne, of Royal Oak, and William Meyers, of Ann Arbor, to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Board of Directors.

The 35-member board is the governing body of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.  

"These individuals are great additions to the Michigan Blues' Board of Directors," said Snyder. "I am confident their extensive backgrounds and experiences will assist the board in leading Michigan's largest health care network."

Haveman retired from the state of Michigan following a career in public and community health, serving in numerous positions, including as director of the Michigan departments of Community Health and Mental Health. He also served as executive director of Kent County Community Mental Health Services and Bethany Christian Services in Grand Rapids. Haveman is president of the Haveman Group, a Grand Haven-based consulting firm. He holds a bachelor's degree in sociology and economics from Calvin College and a master's of social work from Michigan State University. Haveman will represent retired individuals and replaces James Agee.

Mervenne is president of Mervenne & Company, a public affairs and government relations firm in Royal Oak. She previously served as director of appointments, director of the governor's Southeast Michigan office, special adviser to the governor and chief of staff to the first lady during Gov. John Engler's administration. Mervenne is a member of the board of directors for the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce and Habitat for Humanity of Michigan, and holds a bachelor's degree in urban studies from the James Madison College at Michigan State University. She replaces Gerald Acker.

Meyers retired after years of service in public and corporate accounting. He worked for Price Waterhouse & Co. in Baltimore, New York City and Washington, D.C., including six years as an audit manager. Meyers also served as vice president and controller of TriMas Corp. He is a member of Financial Executives International and the Management Accountants Association. Meyers received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. He will represent retired individuals and replaces Emery Klein.

Appointees will serve two-year terms that expire on Feb. 18, 2014, and their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
